ALL TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNINGS CURRENT FOR TEMOTU PROVINCE ARE NOW CANCELLED.

 

AT 5:00PM THIS EVENING, TROPICAL CYCLONE RITA (CATEGORY 1) WITH A CENTRAL PRESSURE OF 999 HECTOPASCALS WAS LOCATED NEAR 14.7 DEGREES LATITUDE SOUTH AND 169.9 DEGREES LONGITUDE EAST. THIS IS APPROXIMATELY 106 NAUTICAL MILES (196 KILOMETRES) NORTH-NORTHEAST OF MAEWO ISLAND, VANUATU.

 

THE CYCLONE IS MOVING TOWARDS SOUTH-SOUTHEAST AT 09 KNOTS TOWARDS CENTRAL VANUATU FURTHER AWAY FROM THE SOLOMON ISLANDS. 

 

WINDS OVER 33KNOTS (61 KILOMETRES PER HOUR) ARE NO LONGER EXPECTED OVER THE SOUHERN TEMOTU WATERS.

 

HOWEVER SEAS WILL STILL BE MODERATE TO ROUGH WITH MODERATE SWELLS BUT SLOWLY DECREASING.                   

 

THIS WILL BE THE FINAL INFORMATION FOR CYCLONE RITA UNLESS ANY PART OF THE COUNTRY IS UNDER THREAT AGAIN.

A TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING IS CURRENT FOR TEMOTU PROVINCE.

 

AT 5:00 AM THIS MORNING, TROPICAL CYCLONE RITA (CATEGORY 3) WITH A CENTRAL PRESSURE OF 980 HECTOPASCALS WAS LOCATED NEAR 13.2 DEGREES LATITUDE SOUTH AND 169.8 DEGREES LONGITUDE EAST. THIS IS APPROXIMATELY 77 NAUTICAL MILES (143 KILOMETRES) SOUTHEAST OF TIKOPIA ISLAND, TEMOTU PROVINCE.

 

CYCLONE RITA IS MOVING WEST –SOUTHWEST AT 10 KNOTS TOWARDS VANUATU AND GRADUALLY WEAKENING.

 

GALE FORCE WINDS OF 34 TO 47 KNOTS (63-87 KILOMETRES PER HOUR) OR STRONGER ARE EXPECTED TO AFFECT TEMOTU PROVINCE WITH ROUGH SEAS AND MODERATE TO HEAVY SWELLS (3.0 – 4.5 METRES) AND POTENTIAL COASTAL FLOODING.

AT 11:00 AM THIS MORNING, TROPICAL CYCLONE RITA (CATEGORY TWO) WITH A CENTRAL PRESSURE OF 989 HECTOPASCALS WAS LOCATED NEAR 11.7 DEGREES LATITUDE SOUTH AND 169.8 DEGREES LONGITUDE EAST. THIS IS APPROXIMATELY 06 NAUTICAL MILES (11 KILOMETRES) SOUTHWEST OF ANUTA ISLAND, TEMOTU PROVINCE.

 

CYCLONE RITA IS MOVING TOWARDS SOUTHEAST AT 05 KNOTS BETWEEN ANUTA AND TIKOPIA ISLANDS AND SLOWLY STRENGTHENING.

A HEAVY RAIN WARNING IS CURRENTLY ENFORCE FOR ALL PROVINCES.

SITUATION: A TROUGH LIES OVER SOLOMON ISLANDS.

CLOUDY PERIODS OF RAIN SHOWERS AND THUDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO AFFECT ALL PROVINCES.

SUCH HEAVY RAIN CAN LEAND TO FLASH FLOODING AND POSSIBLE LANDSLIDE OVER COMMUNITIES LIVING NEAR HILL SLOPES,

CLOSE TO LARGE RIVERS, STREAMS, AND LOW LYING AREAS.

MOTORISTS IN THOSE AREAS ARE ALSO ADVISCED TO USE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN TRAVELLING ON ROAD. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CROSS RIVERS AND LARGE STREAMS OF UNKNOWN DEPTH. THEREFORE PEOPLE ARE STRONGLY ADVISED TO TAKE SAFELY MEASURES TO AVOID DANGER AND LOSS OF LIVES AND PROPERTY.
