 Situation:

The Solomon Islands Meteorological Service has issued the CANCELLATION OF HEAVY RAIN WARNING at 5PM (1700HRS) this evening, Wednesday 25th April 2018.

However,  a trough lies over Solomon Islands so associated heavy rain, showers and thunderstorms will be experienced but now will slowly be easing out.


People and communities are advised to take care and to take the following Safety Actions:


FOR VILLAGE LEADERS / FAMILIES

  • Maintain look outs for flooding as some rain heavy rain will still be experienced

FOR PEOPLE IN LOW LYING AREAS UNDER THE THREAT OF FLOODING

  •  If you are living close to rivers and shorelines you must take extra precaution measures
  • When evacuated take only essential Items like radio, mobile phones, torch, knife, food, water, important papers, important medicines
  • Store drinking water in sealed bottles as water supply may be interrupted (eg. Dirty or supply cut off)
  • Do not allow children to play in the rain and on flood raising water or drainage systems

FOR MOTORISTS

  • Be advice to take extra care when traveling in wet, slippery and flood areas
  • Make sure you have your lights on and drive at less than 40km per hour speed
  • Beware of water covered roads and bridges
  • Do not attempt to cross rivers and large streams of unknown depth

NDMO Plans for possible response

The NEOC Management Team today meets to develop plan of action for possible response to TC Donna.

Speaking during the Meeting, acting Director of the, National Disaster Management Office, Mr George Baragamu said, our focus for today, is to put together plans as part of the NDMO/NEOC preparation to support, the Provincial Emergency Operation Centres in Lata and Kirakira.

Mr Baragamu stated that, there might be possible significant or severe damage caused by TC Donna, and we must prepare ourselves on how best, we could provide support to the provinces concern, according to our disaster management arrangements.

NDMO partners such as NGOs that are having stock piles at the provinces were also contacted to provide list of available items. This will clearly reveal gaps that may need more attention for planning purposes.

Staffs of the National Disaster Management Office today, are committing their time and effort in making sure the NEOC is ready for the support initiatives.

However, NEOC would like to thank police and NGOs for their support in this preparations.

In the meantime, the NEOC continues to encourage people to listen out to radios for further warnings and what to do information. Public are also encourage to contact 955 or 933 for more information.
